How to run ASA 8 firewall on GNS3 0.7.3

In this post i will explain you how to configure the ASA version 8 firewall in GNS3. Since GNS3 0.7.3 this only took me 5 minutes.

I assume you already have Qemu running.

  • Start GNS3
  • Open the menu, go to “Edit” then “Preferences”.
  • Open the “Qemu” tab.
  • Open the “ASA” tab.
  • Select the “Initrd” file. The filename I used was “asa802-k8.initrd.gz”. Press Open.
  • Select the “Kernel” file. The filename I used was “asa802-k8.kernel”. Press Open.
  • Hit the “Save” button. Press “Ok”.
  • Click and drag an ASA Firewall to your topology screen and press the “Start” button.
  • Minimze your Qemu screen (don’t close it).
  • Press the “Console” button.
  • After it’s done booting wait about 1 minute then type in the following:
    /mnt/disk0/lina_monitor
  • Voila! you have a running ASA 8 Firewall in GNS3.

That’s all there is to it! Thanks to CCNA Tools for the information, this is where i found the explanation to do this.

Now the only thing left to do is make sure we have ASA labs here at GNS3Vault. I’m more of a routing & switching guy so if you have anything to share…please do!

  1. I am running GNS3 v0.7.4 on a windows 7 64bit laptop. I followed all the steps above and I got this error message when I tried to load an ASA firewall. Dynamips error: 202 Unknown-command ‘clean’. What does this mean and how can I fix this?
    thank you,

  2. Dear Rene,
Is there any possibility to use ASDM on ASA run by GNS3?

      1. I have tried the asa84 image. I have configured according to the discription. But I couldn’t start it. I got the following error message.
Dynamips error: Connection lost. When I tried to debug it. I have found something wrong with thw quemuwrapper.exe

        1. I’ve had some issues myself getting the ASA 8.4 to run properly. In the future I’ll spend some more time at it and update this article.

For now…if anyone managed to run it properly in GNS3 on windows or linux please share the process 🙂

          1. Hey bro…. I run the same config as of 842… when I reload my firewall it misses few interfaces 🙁

            Please help

            1. I would help you but I haven’t used the ASA in a long time. Been focusing only on R&S. Some people on the forum are actively using the ASA so it might be better to ask it there.

  3. Has anyone seen the fix for the ASA in GNS3 doing the reboot. I have patched qemu per GNS3 website and followed all the sites I can find on the internet to get asa842-k8 (the 2 files) to work in GNS3. I have copied and pasted several different Qemu Options and Kernel CMD opitons and still get the rebooting error. I have a Windows 7 64bit Lenovo with 6 gig ram. Any help would be greatly appreciated?

  4. I followed everything and used the same config files as suggested. I start the asa and it goes from red to green… When I open the console nothing happens. I am never prompted to enter the /mnt/disk0/lina_monitor command as it just stays with nothing happening.

I don’t get any errors or anything.
