How to Master CCNP ROUTE
How to Master CCNP ROUTE:
The Guide That Shows How To Master CCNP ROUTE The Easy Way. Become A Pro At CISCO Networking Today!

Mastering your Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP ROUTE) exam is one of the most important steps you’ll ever take on the path to becoming a true Cisco professional..
CCNP certification is awarded to candidates in the CISCO professional program when they pass the ROUTE,SWITCH and TSHOOT exams.

With your CCNP certification, you are fully licensed to install, configure and troubleshoot Local and Wide Area Networks (WANs) enterprise networks. If you are CCNP certified you have demonstrated the skills required in enterprise roles like network technician, support engineer, systems engineer of network engineer.
The bottom line?
If you want to become a fully certified Cisco professional, you NEED to master the CCNP ROUTE syllabus and earn your CCNP ROUTE certification.
If you're new to IT, you might have found the CCNP ROUTE subject matter tough.
It can take months to learn the entire CCNP ROUTE syllabus in the classroom, and even then, many students have trouble with the material.
The problem is, most teachers emphasize only the HOW of the computer networking principles covered, not the WHY.
That's why I wrote "How to Master CCNP ROUTE". Unlike classroom approaches, this book shows you HOW and WHY you're doing what you're doing.
I explain each and every principle to you in clear, concise, easy-to-understand terms, so when you read the guide, it's like you're sitting there getting a personsal 1-to-1 consultation from me.
Much more than just a set of commands you have to memorize, “How To Master CCNP ROUTE” is a complete and comprehensive education in CCNP ROUTE theory, practice and implementation. I explain to you exactly HOW everything works, and WHY it works. Starting with CCNP ROUTE theory, I walk you through the entire CCNP ROUTE syllabus, until you thoroughly comprehend everything you need to know in order to get pass your CCNP ROUTE exam. It’s the perfect written supplement to the hands-on training I offer in my free CCNP labs.
What You’ll Learn Inside How To Master CCNP ROUTE:
"How to Master CCNP ROUTE" covers the entire CCNP ROUTE syllabus from start to finish.
In the main text of the book, i'll thoroughly explain and illustrathe the following topics to you. Covering all the subject areas to be tested on the CCNP ROUTE exam, they include:
- Introduction to EIGRP: First I will show you how Cisco's Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) works. You will see how EIGRP selects a successor route, why and when it selects feasible successors and you will learn why EIGRP is so fast.
- EIGRP Packets and Metrics: How does EIGRP use metrics like bandwidth, delay, load and reliability to select the best path and I will teach you what the different K-values are, how and why you want to change them.
- EIGRP over Frame-Relay: Frame-relay is a NBMA (Non-Broadcast Multi Access) network and you will have to make some changes to make sure EIGRP runs on your frame-relay network. You will see what split horizon is and how to use sub-interfaces to overcome the issues that distance vector routing protocols have with frame-relay networks.
- EIGRP Authentication: EIGRP uses an advanced method to configure authentication. I will show you how and why we use key-chains and how to enable MD5 authentiction for EIGRP.
- EIGRP Advanced Features: How and why you should use EIGRP Stubs to reduce the number of EIGRP queries and stuck-in-active issues.
- Introduction to OSPF: I'll teach you how OSPF operates, what the advantages are of link-state routing protocols, how link-state packets work and how OSPF builds the link state database.
- OSPF Packets and Neighbor Discovery: One of the topics you'll learn in CCNP ROUTE is how OSPF forms neighbor relationships over different media like point-to-point, broadcast and non-broadcast networks. You will also learn which packets OSPF uses to achieve this.
- OSPF LSA Types: You need to understand the different LSA types that OSPF uses, and i'll explain it to you in the simplest terms possible!
- OSPF Summarization: You will learn how to configure your OSPF routers to summarize inter-area and external networks between areas.
- OSPF Special Area Types: Part of being a CCNP certified professional is understanding the different area types like the stub area, not so stubby, totally stub and totally NSSA. I will show you the different areas, why we use them and how to configure them.
- OSPF Authentication: I will show you how to protect OSPF by enabling plaintext or MD5 authentication.
- OSPF Virtual Links: You will see how OSPF can use virtual links to connect areas to other areas without being directly connected to area 0 (backbone area) or how to fix a discontigous backbone area.
- Routing Manipulation: Part of being a routing professional means you understand how to influence routing protocols using route-maps, distribute-lists and prefix-lists. You will learn how to change traffic flows and/or filter networks.
- Redistribution: Prefixes can be imported and exported from one routing protocol to another using redistribution. I will explain to how you we do this, the problems you might face and how to overcome them.
- BGP: CCNP professionals have to know how BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) works because this is the routing protocol we use on the Internet. You will learn the difference between BGP and other routing protocols like OSPF/EIGRP and how to configure it.
- BGP Attributes and Path Selection: The power of BGP is being able to influence traffic flows, you will master all the different BGP attributes to achieve this.
- IPv6: We are running out of IPv4 addresses and once you understand IPv6 you will be ready for the future. I will explain to you the differences between IPv4 and IPv6, the migration techniques and also how to configure IPv6 routing protocols.
There's no question about it.
Any subject that you need to know for your CCNP ROUTE exam is covered in this book, in more detail and in easier-to-understand form than any other guides currently on the market.
If you've already studied with me in my CCNP labs, these books will serve as a perfect complement to your lab instructions, giving you a perfect reference to review as you study.
If you're planning on self-studying for your CCNP ROUTE exam, these books are the guides that will help you memorize, internalize and apply all the information you need to master.
In it, you'll find...
…all the theory and high-end information you can’t learn in labs.
This is high-end material you can’t do with your hands, but will nonetheless need to master for your exams.
This is the theoretical foundation on which all CISCO networking practices rest.
It includes things like:
- The OSPF LSA Types, the difference between them and how they work.
- The different OSPF area types like stub area, not so stubby, totally stub and totally NSSA and why you want to use them.
- Why EIGRP chooses a certain path, how it selects backup paths and why it is so fast.
- Differences between different wireless topologies like autonomous and light-weight.
- How the Internet is connected through BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) and the difference between IBGP and EBGP.
- A thorough explanation of IPv6, tunneling techniques, migration strategies and IPv6 routing protocols.
And much, much more.
It’s 250+ pages of pure, no-nonsense information, packaged in a way that’s easy to read and easy to understand.

I currently only offer this book as the PDF version. Reason for this is that a printed version would probably cost about twice as much because of printing+worldwide shipping.
I'm currently working on "How to Master CCNP Switch" which will be ready at the end of the upcoming week!
Let me know if you have any more questions ok?

Rene any chance of creating a book on CCIP?
Rene Molenaar
Thanks for your purchase, I hope you like it! First I'm going to see if a TSHOOT book has additional value and after that I'm going to write a book on BGP, MPLS and QoS for sure!
Rene
Giorgio
the importance of TSHOOT has become huge for the ones who want to carry on to the CCIE.As you probably know the TSHOOT part has also become a common cause of failure.Although there are sources for studying it no one is complete. The argument that a sound understanding of the technologies is enough to pass that part of the exam is incorrect, many candidates agree that specific study is required. So a good reason for a brilliant author like yourself to get involved !
Regards
Giorgio
Rene Molenaar
Thanks for your comment and your input. I've been thinking about TSHOOT a bit more and I agree on what you say. I'm going to write a TSHOOT book for sure! I'm still thinking what I want it to be like so it truly "adds value" on top of the other CCNP books.
Best Regards,
Rene
Giorgio
If I were the author I would be very systematic taking all the technologies
one by one and breaking them in all possible ways.Keeping in mind that
Cisco is telling us that those faults are often TAC cases so human errors not caused by malicious mad breakers !
All the best

I was wondering if you've considered on making a book with the missing technologies not covered in CCNP exams or a book for each technology. For example, I think multicast,QoS, and IS-IS would be good ones to think about.
Rene Molenaar
I will for sure. First I'm going to finish the TSHOOT book and then I'll be working on the BGP, MPLS and QoS books for the CCIP certification. I might do multicast as well in the future. IS-IS would be fun but I'm not sure a lot of people are interested in it since it's gone from CCNP and CCIE R&S :)

Do you explain in detail how to setup and use GNS3 in your labs.? in Router book
Thanks,
Don
Rene Molenaar
I don't explain how to configure GNS3 in the book but I do explain which labs should be done and in what order. If you have any GNS3-related issues or questions you can also just ask the on the forum and I'll help you with that for free.

I want to do multiswitching lab on gns3 but I can not. Do u know another software to practice switching lab
Rene Molenaar
Your best bet is to buy a couple of old 3550 switches on Ebay (they are cheap). 3 of them is enough for CCNP SWITCH. Your second best bet is using rack rentals (take a look at packetlife.net for the free community lab) or use a simulator like Boson.

thank you so much for all your efforts, will you going to add much more materials for the CCIE R&S track in the future?

I do have plans for this for the future, it will take some time however.
Rene
John
Keep up the good work man!
Rene Molenaar
Thanks for your comment :) If you enjoy routing and switching I would recommend continuing with the CCNP track. It doesn't matter much if you start with ROUTE or SWITCH first. My recommendation is to pick either one and then:
A) Read about the protocols)
B) Implement what you learned by doing labs.
In my books I will explain you how and why everything works but I will also refer to the labs on GNS3Vault so you know what to do and in what order.
Let me know if you have any more questions ok? Good luck!
Rene
John
What would you advise in terms of hands on experience? Buying kit or virtual? If buying, could you advise me on what I would need to setup in my home?
Thanks
Rene Molenaar
For ROUTE you don't need any hardware since you can do everything 100% using GNS3. For SWITCH you'll need real hardware. I would suggest buying 2x 2950 and 1x 3550. If you plan on studying QoS in the future then I would replace the 3550 with a 3560.
Rene
Rob
Rene Molenaar
It does but not in depth, only what you'll find on the CCNP ROUTE exam. In the IPv6 chapter there are some tunneling technologies and GRE is there as well.

I 've just seen this web site and I 've read the details and the comments about your book.I want to buy your CCNP ROUTE book.
The price $ 24.95 is the PDF or hard copy book?
I wonder only this case.
Rene Molenaar
I'm currently only selling these as ebooks. It's a PDF so you can read it on pretty much any device. I hope to release these books as 'physical' books in the future but because of international shipping and printing it will be more expensive.
Let me know if you have more questions ok?

Thanks for this briliant book!!!
I begin prepearing for ROUTE a year ago with OCG by Odom. And then i had a break. It was realy borring to read Odom book. But with HTMCR and labs, i mastered ccnp route for a mounth.

Thanks you very much for writing this book :)
I'll keep sharing my experiences as i navigate through topics :)
Rene Molenaar
Thanks for your wonderful comment :) Good to hear that my explanation helps you to understand BGP! Good luck studying and enjoy the books :)

Your book looks a killer, I am already CCNP certified and want to go for the CCNP SP later on but before that I want to consolidate my knowledge. I will be buying your book soon but I see there is no IS-IS . Considering that OSPF & IS-IS are similar in many ways and it is widely used by ISP's worldwide, maybe you should do that too.
Your book would be even better then. So please consider IS-IS & MP-BGP also, if not already covered.
Rene Molenaar
I think you did CCNP a couple of years ago? It's kinda a shame but Cisco decided to remove IS-IS and Multicast from CCNP R&S completely. It's not even on the CCIE R&S exam anymore. MP-BGP is also not on the CCNP track.
CCNP SP will be fun, but keep in mind that it also covers IOS XE/XR. I'll probably add study material for this in the future.
Rene
shoaib sheikh
I acknowledge the fact that mastering the concepts is most important, but i want to know whether the material given in the book is in alignment with what cisco asks in exams (like explanation of dumps question also) i.e. I want to know that ,Is the book a combination of both?
Thanks
Rene Molenaar
My best advice is to take a look at the "sample" of my ebook, you will see what it looks like with your own eyes. What I do in my books is first explain the theory and then demonstrate how to configure things while I explain why I do things. It covers 100% of what you will encounter on the exam but I don't explain example of dump questions or something.
I believe that with studying, understanding the concepts and doing PLENTY of labs you can beat any question you might get on the exam and you don't even need dumps.

I would like to know if your CCNP Route book includes a chapter about branch office connections and VPN configuration. I think it is a part of the Cisco exam.
Thank you.
Rene Molenaar
Yes it is included, it covers DSL, PPPoA, IPSEC VPN and how to connect the Branch office to the HQ using these technologies.
